In need of more funding, Kelly launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo in 2015. Proceeding with the project, he eventually sought out manufacturers who could help him fine-tune the item. Many hours of trial and error later, he had himself a final product. Using materials that he had bought from home improvement stores, he eventually put together a preliminary model. From there, he did a few sketches before getting hands-on with the prototype. "If you have a seasonal product, embrace the positives about it, that there is downtime to think and to work to put together a great plan.Getting to work, he soon found himself measuring hundreds of Christmas trees on display in stores. That gives you ample time to focus on product design and marketing strategy and doing additional research," Bliss says. "The advantage of a seasonal product is that there's a lot of downtime to prepare to get it right. You have to hire people who you know are a little bit further removed from it and not be so emotionally attached." "You have to try to grow as thick a skin as you can early on, because there will be challenges and problems. Dealing with all of the customer service pieces, I'm so emotionally entrenched with the product that any time that I don't get positive feedback, I take it personally," Bliss says. "You really have to hire people to do the job that you aren't good at. You have that one opportunity to get it right." You need to practice, you need to be on point. "Be humble enough to know that you don't know everything, but you better try like hell to learn as much as you possibly can. Even down to identifying what hometowns they grew up in," Bliss says.
